You are looking at a new kitchen cooktop surround with a herringbone inset on each side.
The two outside corners are mitered. Whenever a brick corner is not a ninety degee angle, it needs to be mitered.
Mitering the corner brick is more labor and materials intensive, but it achieves a clean look.
