The finished result of this river rock application is one of my personal favorites.
We hand selected this stone on Mt. Baldy. A lot of natural corner pieces were needed and they usually are not available at the local material yards. To achieve the tight fit I wanted, the right size and shape of the small stones, called "chinks", had to be found.
The round columns have at their core, a four inch square, vertical steel supporting member for the roof structure.
The walls are solid stone and mortar with no block used inside.
The mortar joints were raked back as deep as possible to give a dry stacked appearance. After the mortar is completely dry, the stones are acid washed.
